ICFA is the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Fine Arts. It was founded in 1980, is one of the thirty international committees - and over one hundred national committees - that comprise ICOM the International Council of Museums, based at UNESCO in Paris.
ICFA's membership is made up of around 500 professionals employed by museums and galleries that collect old master and nineteenth-century paintings, sculpture and works on paper. Every year, the committee arranges a meeting so that members can discuss problems and exchange opinions. In the last few years meetings have been held in cities such as St Petersburg, New York and Dublin. Subjects considered recently have included museum design and architecture, historic environments, and the illicit traffic in artworks.
The standard procedure to apply for ICFA membership is the following:
- First, you need to join ICOM.
- Afterwards, you have to advise ICOM that you want to become a member of ICFA. Information on joining an international committee is found here.
- Your application will be transferred from ICOM to ICFA.
As an ICOM member you can become a member with full voting rights of one International Committee. This membership is free of charge and includes all regular services but does not include fees for specific events. You also can choose to become a member of as many other International Committees you wish but as a nonvoting member.
ICFA will be communicating primarily electronically in the future. Therefore it is very important that your contact information be current. Has your postal address, email or telephone/fax changed since you joined ICOM? Send the new one to your ICOM national committee as well as the ICOM Secretariat. They will forward it to ICFA.
